Dr. Jane Wemhoener, who has been known to carry the Sorting Hat during Virginia Tech's Department of English graduation ceremonies, is a senior instructor who began teaching “The Harry Potter Phenomenon” (ENGL 1774) in Spring 2016. At GMF ‘18, she will participate in the panel on teaching Harry Potter at the college and university level. Dr. Wemhoener’s large lecture class at VT is designed for all majors and incorporates multidisciplinary research, small group conversations, and creative multi-media projects based on the novels, play, and films behind the Harry Potter phenomenon.
Dr. Wemhoener’s VT courses include children’s literature, women’s literature, world literature, and international research topics, and her background as a medievalist makes her comfortable in the world of Hogwarts. She directs VT’s London Calling! summer study abroad which annually visits Oxford to walk the Christ Church stone staircase from which Harry often looks out to his friends.
Dr. Wemhoener is a 2012 recipient of her university's Alumni Award for Excellence in Teaching. She received her bachelor's and master’s degrees from Saint Louis University and completed coursework for her Ph.D. at the Ohio State University.
